The literal meaning of Mustang is “Fertile Plain”, former kingdom of Lo and now it is a part of Nepal, bordering the Tibetan plateau which was opened for the tourist in March 1992. Upper mustang is a barren valley with Trans Himalaya. Mustang was once an important route for crossing the Himalaya between Tibet and Nepal, and many of the old salt caravans passed through Mustang.
