The Kathmandu–Charikot–Jiri road follows Nepal's most historically significant overland route – the original approach road to Everest that all expeditions used before the Lukla airstrip opened in 1964. The 188km journey from Kathmandu to Jiri passes through some of Nepal's finest middle-hill countryside: terraced farmland in extraordinary gradients, subtropical river valleys, traditional Tamang and Sherpa villages and mountain viewpoints delivering fine Himalayan views without reaching altitude.
Charikot, at 1,870m in Dolakha district, provides the finest viewpoint on the route with a panoramic view of Gauri Shankar (7,134m) and Menlungtse. The Dolakha Bhimsen Temple at Charikot is one of Nepal's most significant Hindu shrines. Jiri, at the end of the route, is the trailhead for the original Everest Base Camp approach trek – the same path walked by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek (18–20 days) combined with this overland approach provides the most historically complete Everest journey available. The road journey can be done in a day with private vehicle or combined with overnight stays at Charikot or Dhulikhel.
