The Kathmandu Valley Homestay Tour provides one of the most intimate cultural experiences available in Nepal – staying with local Newari and Tamang families in villages within the valley and its surrounding hills, sharing meals and daily life while exploring the valley's extraordinary heritage sites with a guide who is a genuine member of the communities you're visiting.
The programme visits 2–3 different communities over 6–7 days: a Newari family homestay in a traditional Bhaktapur neighbourhood provides access to the living craft and food culture of Nepal's most preserved medieval city. A Tamang village homestay above the valley (Sundarijal or Chisapani area) provides experience of the hill farming community maintaining a very different culture from the Newari valley towns. The heritage sightseeing component covers all major UNESCO sites with the added advantage of guide insight coming from someone with genuine local roots. Meals are prepared in the family kitchen: traditional Newari dishes, hill community food and the daily dal bhat. Families receive fair compensation directly.
