The Karnali River expedition is Nepal's finest multi-day rafting journey – a 10-day wilderness adventure through the remotest and most spectacular river corridor in the country. The Karnali drains the highest plateau in Nepal and carves through the Siwalik Hills in grade IV–V rapids consistently rated among the finest in Asia. The surrounding wilderness – pristine mixed subtropical forest, enormous sand beaches and complete absence of road access for much of the route – creates a genuine expedition feeling unavailable on Nepal's more accessible rivers.
The standard Karnali expedition puts in at Sauli (accessible from Surkhet by road after a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj) and takes out at Chisapani near Bardia National Park – 185km of river over 10 days. Camping on enormous sand beaches throughout; all camping equipment and full catering provided. The take-out near Bardia National Park allows combination with a Bardia wildlife safari for a complete western Nepal wilderness programme. Our expedition includes all flights, camping and rafting equipment, certified guides, safety kayakers and full catering. Best season: October–June.

It is 4am on the banks of the Trisuli River in Himalayan Nepal. We are awoken by the metallic clank of enamel mugs and a weather-beaten hand, thrusting steaming hot chocolate into our little tent. The steam from our breath fills the tent as we rub the sleepy dust from our eyes and straighten out the cricks in our backs. Slowly we emerge, wrapped in thick blankets and wearing yesterday clothes, which were far too warm to consider changing at that ungodly hour.
We made our way groggily up the mountain by flashlight, feeling the effects of little sleep and the biting cold, until we finally stopped on a ridge. As the false dawn spilled its first vestige of light over the mountains, we were pleasantly surprised to see standing on the same ridge, in absolute pin-dropping silence, other intrepid travelers congregated for this shared experience.
And there before our eyes, Mount Everest, in all its majesty and bathed in golden light from the sun’s earliest rays, took our breath away. No room for cold now, our heats lifted along with our spirits and we were left mesmerised and speechless at the sheer awe of this magical life-changing moment.
