Namobuddha Day Hike

The hike from Dhulikhel to Namobuddha Monastery is the finest cultural day walk near Kathmandu – a 3-hour trail through terraced farmland, oak forest and traditional farming villages to one of Nepal's three holiest Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The Namobuddha Stupa marks the site where a Bodhisattva prince offered his body to feed a starving tigress and her cubs – an act of supreme compassion central to Buddhist teaching on selflessness. The active monastery above the stupa is home to resident monks and provides a 45-minute visit explaining the site's history and significance.

The optional extension to Panauti (2 additional hours) adds one of Nepal's finest least-visited medieval Newari towns – a beautifully preserved settlement at the confluence of three rivers with the ancient Indreshwar Mahadev temple (14th century) at its centre. The full Dhulikhel–Namobuddha–Panauti circuit is one of the best single-day cultural and natural experiences available from Kathmandu. Our day trip package includes: private vehicle Kathmandu–Dhulikhel and Panauti–Kathmandu, licensed guide throughout, all entry fees and lunch.
