Mountain biking through the ancient kingdom of Upper Mustang provides one of Nepal's most extraordinary cycling experiences – 120km of gravel road through ochre and purple desert landscape, past ancient cave dwellings, prayer-flag villages and the walled medieval capital of Lo Manthang, in a high-altitude rain-shadow terrain that receives minimal monsoon rain and is accessible when most other Nepal destinations are sodden. The Upper Mustang cycling route is genuinely unlike anything else available in Asia.
Our Upper Mustang mountain biking tour flies from Pokhara to Jomsom (20 minutes) before beginning the gravel road north through Kagbeni, Chele, Ghami and Tsarang to Lo Manthang (3,840m). The riding is physically demanding – sustained altitude, remote terrain and rough road surfaces – but technically not extreme. A support jeep carries luggage and provides emergency support throughout. Teahouse accommodation at each village stop along the route. The Restricted Area Permit (USD 500 per person for 10 days) is required and included. Best season: May–October (rain shadow – accessible during monsoon). Duration: 12 days from Pokhara return.
