The Jomsom to Pokhara mountain biking route is Nepal's most dramatic downhill cycling journey – a 3–5 day descent following the Kali Gandaki gorge from the arid Mustang plateau at 2,700m down through the world's deepest river canyon to Pokhara's lakeside at 884m. The route passes through Thakali trading villages with their distinctive flat-roofed architecture, apple orchards and apple brandy distilleries, Buddhist gompas on cliff faces above the gorge and the extraordinary wind-sculpted landscape of the upper Kali Gandaki that changes character completely every hour of cycling.
The standard 3-day programme flies from Pokhara to Jomsom (20 minutes) to start the descent and cycles back through Marpha, Tukuche, Ghasa, Dana, Tatopani (hot springs), Beni and then road to Pokhara. The 5-day version includes more time at key cultural stops and extends into the lower gorge's forest sections. All meals, teahouse accommodation, quality bike hire (hardtail recommended for the trail sections), cycling guide and support vehicle (for luggage and emergency) are included. Previous mountain biking experience recommended. Best season: October–May.
