Nepal's agriculture tour is a day programme in the Kathmandu Valley that provides genuine encounter with the farming communities that produce the valley's food – visiting organic farms, watching traditional farming methods in action, meeting the farm families and understanding the agricultural practices that have sustained the Kathmandu Valley's dense population for thousands of years.
The programme visits 2–3 different farming families in the valley's rural villages (Kirtipur, Khokana, or the valley rim villages around Nagarkot and Dhulikhel). Activities include: harvesting seasonal crops with the family, preparing traditional farming implements, learning about the seed-saving and composting practices that sustain organic productivity without chemical inputs, tasting farm-produced vegetables and fruits, and sharing a meal prepared by the farmer's family. The valley's extraordinary concentration of UNESCO heritage monuments provides cultural context throughout. Can be combined with Bhaktapur's Pottery Square (where traditional clay vessels are still produced from locally sourced clay) for a complete Kathmandu Valley rural culture experience.
