Bardia National Park (968km²) in far western Nepal is Nepal's largest national park and its finest destination for serious wildlife enthusiasts. The park's lower visitor numbers compared to Chitwan translate directly into more authentic encounters: fewer vehicles, genuine wilderness immersion and significantly better conditions for tiger tracking. Bardia has the highest density of Bengal tigers in Nepal, a substantial one-horned rhino population, wild elephants, swamp deer (barasingha), smooth-coated otters and the extraordinary Gangetic river dolphin in the Karnali River that borders the park's western edge.
Getting to Bardia requires a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj followed by a 2-hour road transfer to the park entrance – a journey that filters out casual visitors and contributes to the park's uncrowded character. Once there, the safari infrastructure is excellent: quality jungle lodges, licensed naturalist guides and the combination of jeep safaris, jungle walks, river canoe trips and Tharu cultural experiences that makes Bardia one of Asia's most rewarding wildlife destinations.
Bengal tiger: Bardia has Nepal's highest tiger density and long grass tiger sightings (tigers walking through the tall elephant grass, a uniquely dramatic wildlife encounter) are a realistic expectation on a 4-5 day visit. One-horned rhino: the population is smaller than Chitwan but encounters in the park's grassland areas are regular. Wild elephant: small herds move through the park's sal forest. Gangetic dolphin: one of the world's most endangered freshwater dolphins can be seen on canoe trips on the Karnali River. Birdlife: over 250 species including Bengal florican, lesser adjutant stork and multiple kingfisher species along the river margins.
Duration: 4-5 days recommended. Includes: jungle lodge accommodation, all meals, licensed naturalist guide, national park entry fees, jeep safari, canoe trip on the Karnali, jungle walk, Tharu community visit, domestic flight Kathmandu-Nepalgunj and ground transfer. Best season: November-April.
