Nepal is one of the world's premier birdwatching destinations. The country's extraordinary altitudinal range – from subtropical Terai plains at 70m to alpine terrain above 5,000m – creates habitat diversity that supports more than 850 recorded bird species, representing approximately 8% of the world's total bird species in a country covering just 0.1% of the earth's landmass. The combination of Himalayan species (snow partridge, Himalayan monal pheasant, grandala, various accentors and rosefinches), terai specialities (Bengal florican, lesser adjutant stork, swamp francolin, great hornbill) and migrant species passing through Nepal creates birdwatching conditions that compare with the best the Indian subcontinent offers.
Phulchoki Mountain (2,782m): The highest point on the Kathmandu Valley rim. Nepal's finest site for mid-elevation Himalayan species: Himalayan monal, spiny babbler (Nepal's only endemic bird), various laughingthrushes and warblers. Spring migration produces extraordinary movement through the rhododendron forest. Chitwan National Park: The finest site in Nepal for terai lowland species. Bengal florican (critically endangered), lesser adjutant stork, black-necked stork, rufous-necked hornbill, four kingfisher species, Indian roller, multiple sunbirds and an extraordinary dawn chorus from resident forest species. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve: Nepal's premier waterbird destination on the Koshi River flood plains. Over 500 species recorded including globally rare passage migrants, Sarus crane, Indian skimmer, black-bellied tern and exceptional wader concentrations during migration. Shivapuri National Park: Excellent mid-elevation forest birdwatching accessible from Kathmandu within one hour. Red-billed blue magpie, Himalayan woodpecker, various flycatchers and warblers.
