Muktinath (3,800m) is one of Nepal's most sacred and most dramatically positioned pilgrimage sites – a temple complex in the Mustang district where an eternal flame fuelled by natural gas burns beside a sacred spring in a complex sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The pilgrimage traditionally approaches through the Kali Gandaki gorge – the world's deepest river valley between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna – making the journey as extraordinary as the destination.
Our Muktinath Kaligandaki tour flies from Pokhara to Jomsom (20 minutes, daily flights in season) before exploring the extraordinary Kali Gandaki landscape by jeep and on foot: Marpha's traditional stone village with its famous apple orchards and distillery, Kagbeni at the gateway to Upper Mustang, the wind-blasted town of Jomsom itself and the final drive to Muktinath's temple complex. The descent through the Kali Gandaki gorge – following the ancient trading route connecting Nepal with Tibet for centuries – is one of Nepal's most dramatic overland experiences. The trekking version of this route forms part of the Jomsom Muktinath Trek offered by our trekking partners at Getaway Nepal. Best season: March–November.
