The Kathmandu Valley contains a concentration of sacred sites unmatched in South Asia – active temples, shrines and pilgrimage destinations where Hindu and Buddhist devotion has continued unbroken for centuries. Our Kathmandu pilgrimage tour visits both major traditions across 3–4 days, with specialist guides who understand the religious significance of each site as fully as its architectural and historical interest.
The Hindu pilgrimage circuit covers Pashupatinath Temple – Nepal's holiest Shiva temple on the sacred Bagmati River, with its extraordinary daily cremation ceremonies and 12th-century main temple architecture; Changu Narayan – the oldest Vishnu temple in the valley (4th century AD) on its hilltop 22km from Kathmandu; and Dakshinkali – the powerful goddess temple south of Kathmandu where ritual animal sacrifice takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The Buddhist pilgrimage circuit covers Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath, Namobuddha (one of Nepal's three holiest Buddhist sites, a half-day walk from Dhulikhel) and Pharping's sacred caves where Padmasambhava is said to have attained enlightenment. Our programme includes all transport, specialist guide, photography permissions and all entry fees.
