Nepal is one of the finest birdwatching countries in Asia. Despite covering only 0.1% of the earth's land area, Nepal records over 850 bird species – approximately 8.5% of the world's total. This extraordinary avian diversity results from the country's dramatic altitudinal range: from subtropical Terai plains at 70m to alpine zones above 5,000m, the habitat transitions support wildly different bird communities at each elevation zone.

The key birdwatching sites vary by habitat. Phulchoki Mountain (2,782m, Kathmandu Valley): Nepal's best site for mid-elevation Himalayan species including the Himalayan monal pheasant (Nepal's national bird) and the spiny babbler (Nepal's only endemic bird).
