Nepal is one of Asia's finest butterfly watching destinations with over 650 recorded species. The country's dramatic altitudinal range – from subtropical Terai plains to Himalayan alpine zones – creates butterfly habitat diversity supporting both common and extremely rare species across an enormous altitudinal gradient. The best butterfly watching coincides with the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons when forest flowers are most abundant and species activity is highest.
The key butterfly watching sites include: Chitwan National Park and its buffer zones (subtropical and mixed forest, excellent for large butterflies and forest species); Shivapuri National Park above Kathmandu (mid-elevation deciduous and rhododendron forest); the Kathmandu Valley rim hills particularly Phulchoki; and the Annapurna foothills at 1,000–2,500m during spring and post-monsoon. Notable species include spectacular swallowtails, various forest species endemic to the Himalayan foothills, and the many alpine species found above 3,000m. We organise butterfly watching tours in combination with birdwatching and general nature programmes in Chitwan and the Kathmandu Valley.
Nepal is one of the best places to find beautiful and colorful butterflies. According to official records, Nepal has 651 species of butterflies which is 3.72 percent of the world's butterflies. The beautiful forested hill stations like Phulchowki, Jamachowk and Shivapuri, and the open scrubby bush areas of Nagarkot, Suryavinayak and Chandragiri are good areas for butterfly watching.
