Spending two nights staying in a Nepalese Buddhist monastery is one of the most distinctive and memorable short breaks available in the Kathmandu Valley. The experience provides a genuine encounter with Tibetan Buddhist monastic life – attending morning and evening puja ceremonies, talking with monks and novice students, observing the daily rhythms of prayer, study and community work, and having the monastery's extraordinary cultural and artistic heritage explained by resident teachers.
Our monastery stay programme places guests in one of two outstanding Kathmandu Valley monasteries: Kopan Monastery above Kathmandu (the most internationally known Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Nepal, offering regular meditation courses and visitor programmes for non-Buddhists) or Nagi Gompa on the Shivapuri hillside (a nunnery with outstanding valley views and a more contemplative character). Both have simple but comfortable guest accommodation; meals are vegetarian and shared with the monastic community. The programme includes guided explanation of Buddhist philosophy and practice, attendance at morning and evening ceremonies and walking meditation instruction. Two nights is the minimum; longer stays of 4–7 days are also available.
