Gai Jatra Festival Tour – Cow Festival Nepal

Gai Jatra (the Cow Festival) is one of Nepal's most unique and visually extraordinary celebrations – a Newari festival held in August (Bhadra Shukla Pratipada) in which families who lost a member in the previous year lead a cow or a boy dressed as a cow in procession through the streets of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, guided by the belief that the sacred cow will help the deceased find their way to heaven. The festival has evolved into a day of satire and social commentary where traditional performers and ordinary people dress in outrageous costumes and lampoon politicians, social norms and contemporary Nepal in a spirit of licensed transgression unique to this celebration.

Our Gai Jatra tour combines the morning procession viewing in Bhaktapur – where the festival retains its most traditional and visually dramatic form – with an afternoon in Kathmandu's old city where the more satirical modern celebrations are centred. Duration: 5 days, including Kathmandu and Bhaktapur heritage context. Exact dates change annually with the Nepali lunar calendar. Includes: private cultural guide, all transport, quality accommodation and all entry fees.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Nepal.
Welcome to Kathmandu Valley (1360m). Upon Your arrival we assist you from airport tour hotel. Enjoy welcome programs and culture dance at evening. Overnight at hotel.

Day 2: Kathmandu Sightseeing Tourn
Full day sightseeing around Kathmandu valley. Visit famous Pashupatinath, Symanbhunath, and Basantapur Durbar Square etc. overnight at hotel.

Day 3: Enjoy Cow Festival.
Enjoy cow festival in Bhaktapur. Overnight at hotel.

Day 4: Free day for relaxation.
Breakfast in the hotel and you will have free time for relaxation. Overnight at hotel.

Day 5: Departure from Nepal.
Half day shopping and city exploration and then final departure. Farewell!!
